For many years, female characters in Nollywood followed patterns audiences knew almost by heart. If you watched enough films in the early 2000s, you could often predict a woman’s role within the first few scenes.

There was the wicked stepmother, the jealous rival, or the seductive “village vixen". These characters drove the drama, but they were rarely written with much depth. Their purpose in the story was usually clear: create conflict, tempt someone into trouble, or suffer quietly through hardship.

Veteran actress Patience Ozokwor became almost synonymous with the strict or manipulative mother-in-law. In films like Mother in Law released in 2023, her performances were unforgettable, and audiences loved the intensity she brought to those roles. But the industry often returned to the same character type again and again, an older woman who disrupts the peace of the home.

On the other side were actresses known for emotionally heavy roles. In many classic Nollywood dramas, the female lead was often the one enduring betrayal, poverty, or a troubled marriage. Emotional suffering was almost expected of the female protagonist. Actresses like Mercy Johnson often portrayed women dealing with betrayal, financial struggles, or difficult marriages. In films like Weeping Soul (2009), she brought an intensity to those roles that audiences found compelling. But the frequency of these characters also revealed something about the industry’s storytelling habits, women were often written in ways that centred their pain rather than their agency.

Looking back now, it raises an interesting question about those portrayals. Were they simply dramatic storytelling, or did they also mirror the expectations placed on women in society? In many films, female characters were patient and resilient, sometimes even manipulative when pushed to the edge, but rarely shown as people fully in control of their own choices. Whether that was deliberate or not, these roles often echoed the social attitudes of the time.

Gradually, audiences began to crave something different. Their lives on screen started to involve careers, friendships, ambitions, and personal decisions, not just romantic conflict or family drama.

Actresses like Genevieve Nnaji helped push that change by portraying characters who feel thoughtful, independent, and emotionally complex. In films like Lionheart (2018), she plays a determined woman trying to prove herself in her family’s transport company, navigating work, relationships, and self-discovery in ways that feel closer to real life.

In another direction, Funke Akindele has expanded how female characters are written through comedy and television. In projects like Jenifa's Diary (2015), her characters are bold, ambitious, messy, and very human. They don’t fit neatly into the old categories of villain or victim, and that unpredictability makes them more relatable.

Even with these shifts, some critics argue that the industry hasn’t completely left its old habits behind.

The “village vixen", for instance, may now appear as the glamorous socialite in an urban setting. The wicked stepmother might reappear as a controlling boss or wealthy matriarch. The costumes and settings change, but the underlying character type sometimes remains familiar.

This also raises an interesting question. If stereotypes once dominated the screen, does the recent shift suggest that the writers themselves are beginning to think differently about the characters they create?

Part of that change may be connected to how the industry has evolved. Nollywood today is very different from what it was decades ago. Many filmmakers have studied cinema more formally, worked with international collaborators, or produced films for streaming platforms that encourage more layered storytelling.

As a result, some writers are beginning to approach female characters with greater complexity. Instead of appearing only as moral lessons or sources of conflict, these women are written as people with their own ambitions and contradictions. They make mistakes, build careers, question themselves, and navigate friendships and relationships in ways that feel closer to real life.&nbsp;

In films like Lionheart (2018), directed by and starring Genevieve Nnaji, the central character struggles to prove herself in a male-dominated family business. In King of Boys released in 2018, Kemi Adetiba presents a powerful but deeply flawed female political figure navigating ambition and morality. And in The Wedding Party (2016), the female lead balances career aspirations, family pressure, and romantic expectations. These kinds of stories show women whose lives on screen are no longer limited to marriage, jealousy, or family disputes.

Some writers are reshaping female characters in Nollywood, giving them depth, ambition, and contradictions. Kemi Adetiba, in particular, has consistently crafted women who feel real and fully human; flawed, strong, and relatable. Through her work, and that of other visionary writers, Nollywood is moving beyond one-dimensional roles, showing women with lives, choices, and complexities all their own.

At the same time, the shift is not complete. Some films still rely on familiar shortcuts because audiences recognise them instantly. Old storytelling habits are hard to abandon entirely.

At the same time, audiences seem more aware of representation than they once were. Viewers are beginning to notice when female characters feel flat or predictable and when they feel genuine and fully developed.

As African cinema continues to reach audiences beyond the continent, the way women are written on screen may keep evolving as well. The real question now is how boldly filmmakers will imagine the next generation of female characters. Will they continue to challenge old stereotypes, or play it safe? With writers and directors pushing boundaries and audiences paying closer attention than ever, the possibilities are exciting, and the next wave of Nollywood women could be more fearless, complex, and unforgettable than anything we’ve seen before.
