Before anyone called it "Nollywood", Nigerian filmmakers were already telling stories on screen and doing so against the odds. In the 1970s, names like Ola Balogun and Hubert Ogunde were translating theatre traditions into film, working with celluloid at a time when funding was scarce and infrastructure was unreliable. Cinema wasn’t exactly thriving then. Equipment was expensive, distribution was uncertain, and yet the work continued. The ambition was there, even if the system wasn’t.

However, by the late 1980s, economic downturns and the collapse of cinema culture across Nigeria had made theatrical exhibition increasingly unsustainable. Many cinema houses shut their doors. Imported films dominated the few remaining screens. Local filmmakers faced a stark choice: adapt or disappear.

The adaptation came in 1992 with the release of Living in Bondage, produced by Kenneth Nnebue. Rather than wait for cinema access, the film was distributed directly on VHS tapes through electronics and open markets. It was a commercial success that caught the industry by surprise. What looked like a workaround became a business model.

That moment is often described as the birth of modern Nollywood. But more accurately, it was the birth of an ecosystem, one built on accessibility, speed, and entrepreneurial instinct.

The Home-Video Revolution And Economic Resilience

Throughout the 1990s, Nollywood grew not through institutional backing, but through market responsiveness. Producers financed films independently. Distribution flowed through hubs like Alaba International Market in Lagos. Stories were shot quickly, edited swiftly, and released into circulation almost immediately.

By the early 2000s, <a href="https://nollywoodgazette.com/latest-news/nollywood-s-digital-revolution-the-transformative-impact-of-digital-streaming-platforms">Nollywood was frequently cited as one of the most prolific film industries </a>in the world in terms of output. Its growth was organic, driven by audience demand rather than formal policy.

Yet success came with structural weaknesses. Piracy became one of the industry’s most damaging obstacles. Producers often saw their films duplicated and sold illegally within days of release. According to various industry stakeholders in the 2000s, revenue losses were staggering. But instead of collapsing, Nollywood adapted again, reducing production timelines and relying on volume to survive.

It was not a perfect system. It was survival. And that survival instinct became part of Nollywood’s DNA.

Cinema Renaissance And “New Nollywood” (2004–2015)

The opening of Silverbird Galleria in Lagos in May 2004 marked a symbolic turning point. For the first time in years, Nigerian films had access to a modern multiplex experience. The return of structured theatrical exhibition gradually shifted audience expectations.

Filmmakers began investing more in production value. Scripts became more layered. Marketing strategies evolved.

In 2009, Kunle Afolayan’s The Figurine demonstrated that Nigerian audiences would pay for higher-quality cinema experiences. It wasn’t just a film release; it was a signal that Nollywood could reinvent itself without abandoning its audience base.

Other productions followed. One of the most notable was Half of a Yellow Sun (2013), which brought together international and Nigerian actors in adapting Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s novel. Beyond the cast and scale, the film signalled something bigger. Nigerian stories were beginning to travel more deliberately, no longer limited to home audiences. You could sense the industry stretching itself, testing what it could become.

Streaming, Global Visibility, And Structural Change (2011–Present)If the return of cinemas felt like reinvention, streaming felt like acceleration.

When iROKOtv launched in 2011, it wasn’t just another platform; it was a direct response to diaspora demand for Nollywood films online. Suddenly, viewers in London, Houston, or Johannesburg didn’t have to wait for DVDs or market copies. They could stream Nigerian films legally and instantly. That shift changed expectations, and it confirmed that the audience was far bigger than previously imagined.

In 2018, Netflix acquired Genevieve Nnaji’s Lionheart, a move that many saw as a turning point for Nollywood. It became Netflix’s first Nigerian original acquisition and Nigeria’s first submission to the Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film. Whether or not it advanced in the Oscars race, the symbolic weight was undeniable.

Suddenly, Nollywood was no longer just prolific; it was visible. Since then, platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and Showmax have poured money into Nigerian originals. Budgets have grown. Technical standards have improved. Productions now pay closer attention to lighting, sound design, post-production, and details that used to be rushed. Films like Citation (2020) and Aníkúlápó (2022) show that shift clearly. They are bigger in scale, more deliberate in execution, and clearly designed to travel beyond Nigerian borders while still grounded in local culture.

But streaming hasn’t just expanded opportunities; it has changed the rules. There’s tighter quality control now. Commissioning decisions are often influenced by data and audience analytics. The marketplace feels more competitive and less forgiving. An industry that once thrived on speed and volume is now learning to slow down and refine.

Infrastructure, Policy, And Sustainability

Greater visibility hasn’t automatically fixed structural gaps. Funding is still inconsistent. Insurance frameworks remain underdeveloped. Distribution transparency is uneven. And piracy, though less visible than in the VHS era, hasn’t disappeared.Modern Nollywood is no longer just about making films. It is about building systems. And systems require planning, regulation, and patience, qualities that differ from the industry’s improvisational origins.

There have been attempts at formal intervention. Institutions like the Bank of Industry have introduced funding schemes to support film production and distribution, and some of these efforts have made a difference. But real sustainability goes beyond periodic funding rounds. It depends on systems that work consistently, from film schools that train skilled professionals to post-production facilities that can meet growing industry demands.

Modern Nollywood is no longer just about making films. It is about building systems. And systems require planning, regulation, and patience, qualities that differ from the industry’s improvisational origins.

Nollywood’s evolution tells a larger story about African creativity under constraint. It built an industry without waiting for permission. It reached global audiences without formal export structures.

Modernisation isn’t optional. Nollywood needs professional contracts, <a href="https://nollywoodgazette.com/latest-news/uk-and-nigeria-join-forces-to-boost-creative-industry-collaboration">global partnerships</a>, standardised production pipelines, and better technology if it wants to stay relevant.

But we shouldn’t forget what got the industry here in the first place: the entrepreneurial spirit that built it from nothing. The informal networks of the 1990s may not run things today, but the courage behind them still has lessons for everyone.&nbsp;

Filmmakers learned to innovate even when resources were tight, to create despite limits, and to push boundaries when the system didn’t support them. That mindset is just as important now as it was then.&nbsp;

As Nollywood positions itself within the global film economy, its past should not be treated as something to outgrow. It is a blueprint, one that reminds the industry that resilience, not perfection, sparked its rise. The question is no longer whether Nollywood can modernise. It already is.
