Every few years, SpongeBob SquarePants resurfaces on the big screen, dragging audiences back into Bikini Bottom for another blast of hyperactive absurdity. Search for SquarePants is the latest entry in that cycle&nbsp; a brightly coloured, relentlessly noisy adventure that knows exactly who it’s made for, even if it doesn’t always give anyone else much reason to stay afloat.

This time around, SpongeBob (once again voiced with tireless enthusiasm by Tom Kenny) is captivated by tales of Mr. Krabs’ swashbuckling past. Determined to grow into a “real” hero, he ropes Patrick into summoning the Flying Dutchman (Mark Hamill) for pirate training. Naturally, the ghostly captain has an agenda of his own, and what begins as a mentorship fantasy quickly spirals into another chaotic undersea misadventure involving curses, betrayals, and trips to places best avoided.

Not that the plot carries much weight. Like most SpongeBob films, the story exists mainly as scaffolding for a barrage of jokes, exaggerated reactions, and surreal detours. The franchise has always thrived on this anything-goes energy, but Search for SquarePants feels thinner than usual, lacking the inspired weirdness that once set these movies apart. There are no left-field celebrity cameos or truly jaw-dropping visual gags and you can feel their absence.

SpongeBob himself remains reliably watchable, his mix of cheerful incompetence and unwavering optimism still oddly endearing. The problem isn’t the character, but the situations he’s dropped into. Everything moves at breakneck speed, yet little feels genuinely inventive. The chaos is constant, but familiar, and for adult viewers, that sameness quickly becomes draining.

For kids, this won’t matter. The film delivers exactly what it promises: loud jokes, cartoon logic, and a hero who always wins by being relentlessly himself. For longtime fans or parents hoping for a spark of inspired madness, though, this outing may feel like SpongeBob going through the motions rather than charting new waters.

It’s colourful, cheerful, and exhausting&nbsp; a serviceable addition to the SpongeBob canon, but far from one of its most memorable adventures.

Search for SquarePants delivers fast jokes, pirate chaos and familiar fun, but lacks the inspired madness that once set the franchise apart.
